Walking, growing veggies, pets and more

Upon walking into the chicken coop a few days ago I spotted this rather large egg in one of the boxes.  We have had an 80 gram egg in the past however this one looked and felt bigger.  Put it on the scales where it topped a whopping 95 grams.

My first thought went straight to the chicken however I had no idea who the clever girl was so I just thanked them all.  I gave half a dozen eggs to Mum and Dad including this special one.  I'm curious to find out if it has a double yolk.

Out in the veggie garden I've been harvesting some beautiful cauliflower heads which I've been sharing and also turning them into delicious dishes.  As I harvest them I'm also pulling them out to make room for some new veggies.  One more cauliflower to go and then I'll prepare the soil ready for new veggies.

The cabbages are also ready which I've been harvesting and using for various meals.  They did take quite a while from planting to harvest and also need quite a lot of room.  I will plant something else next year as our garden is fairly small.  In saying that I am glad I gave them a go as they were another first for me.  I like to try different veggies as I learn something new each time and it helps me work out what to plant the following year too.

We also have one last Romanesco Broccoli which I was about to remove when I noticed a small head starting to form.  The others were harvested a number of weeks ago so this was a little surprise as it's quite late.

The kale is growing rapidly and I'm constantly trimming the outer leaves to use in the kitchen as well as sharing with the chickens.  Chives and parsley are also growing quickly and keeping up with our consumption.

Samson is doing well and enjoying his morning walks.  We've had a few warmer days where he struggles a little more so I shorten his walks on those days.  Cooler days suit him much better and he has a lot more energy.  Walking past the lake a few days ago I spotted some fluffy little ducklings gliding through the water with mother duck very close by.

Walking along the waters edge admiring these ducklings when all of a sudden something jumped up and into the water.  Certainly woke me up and got the heart racing.  These two ducks were hidden by the grass when I almost stumbled  on them.  Not sure who got the biggest fright.

One of my favourite walks.

Interesting things we find and so close to home.

A lot of our walking tracks have now been made into proper walking paths which allows access for so many people which is great such as bikes, scooters, prams and wheelchairs.  I've noticed I still walk on the grass though and others must do the same because new little dirt tracks are slowly forming.  Walking on dirt trails is something I enjoy and keep finding myself on.  Occasionally we walk through town for a change which is good especially early in the morning with the smell of the bakeries however the next day I'm looking for that quiet track once again.

Over the weekend we visited a family friend in her nursing home.  Our daughter had been working on a sign for her bedroom door and couldn't wait to present her with it.  As you could imagine it was well received and is proudly hanging on her door.  The best door sign in the home I believe.

I'm so proud of her.

As our neighbour has recently moved into the same home the kids and I popped down and said a quick hello.  She was on her way to the dining room for dinner but spotted us coming and recognised us straight away.  It was good to see her looking so well and happy.

A lot has been happening in our kitchen with some special baking and a new recipe which was absolutely delicious.  The kids were still talking about it the next day and said it needs to go on the blog to share.  I'll get the recipe up in the next few days.  It's a goodie.

Looking forward to Thursday as we are finally having a skylight installed in the kitchen.  Ever since renovating the kitchen 14 years ago I have wanted a skylight and Thursday is the big day.  I'll post a before and after photo and look forward to the natural light shining through.

So much to look forward to with walking, cooking, relaxing, reading, catching up with friends and much more.

  1. The chook that laid that egg probably needs a Bex and a good lie down to recover! I am sure you will enjoy working in your kitchen even more after the skylight is installed.

    1. I certainly would have given the chicken a hug if only I knew which one it was. One more sleep for that skylight.

  2. Kylie, that is certainly a huge egg. You certainly do keep yourself busy and your walks sound very relaxing apart from being startled by the ducks. LOL!

  3. That egg is huge! One of my hens to see to lay petit, brown eggs. They were so cute. The scenery on your walks looks beautiful. I'm glad that Jean likes her sign. It's sweet.

    1. I have a similar one which lays little eggs with a very light colour shell. Another one is sort of speckly.

  4. I always love to see the veggies you grow. And your chickens. :) I think it must be all the nutritious food that you give them makes large eggs.

    1. Or maybe they just eat too much. Busy little eaters that’s for sure.

  5. What a beautiful gift for Jean that your daughter has made, Kylie. Just this morning, my husband and I were talking about the elderly in our country. There was a news article recently which really highlighted the loneliness of our elderly, up to 40% in nursing homes have no visitors. Then you read about the attacks on elderly people in their homes, elder abuse, the elderly trying to live on meagre pensions. It makes me sad that there seems to be a real lack of respect for those who have lived a full life and who carry so much wisdom. It gladdens my heart when I read about the beautiful kindnesses towards out elderly treasures like the gift your daughter has made. I'm sure it brought great joy and will bring smiles every time Jean sees it. Meg Xx

    1. That figure is so high Meg. Sad to think about how lonely they must feel.
Jean has been receiving many comments on her new sign and I’m sure it would give her a good feeling whenever she sees it.

  6. Wow that egg is huge! I think our record egg was in the 80's. I'm sure you will really appreciate that skylight. We have a dark kitchen too, but it is a two storey house so a skylight isn't an option. Have a great day!

  7. What a gorgeous gift for Jean from your daughter. My beloved Aunty Jean spent her last couple of years in a "home" in NZ and my parents still live in the Retirement Village that is on the same property. The elderly there loved it when my grandkids used to scoot over to see Aunty Jean and chat away to anyone who was willing to listen.
I so love the idea I think it is Norway that has Kindergartens in the Old Folks Homes. So good for both generations and the elderly have so much to share and teach the little ones. We could so learn from countries like that.

    1. That is a great idea Lyndie and makes perfect sense.
When the kids and I walked into the dining room the other day I saw all their faces light up. They go together so well.

  8. Thank you for taking us along on your walk Kylie, it is so much prettier than where I go :)

Your daughter has the sweetest heart, and the sign is lovely. Jean will be impressed!

That is a whopper of an egg, wouldn't like to push that monster out lol!

A skylight is something I have requested for my kitchen over the years. In the late afternoon it gets quite dark in the kitchen area and I have to turn the light on. I'll keep nagging lol! I cant wait to see pictures of yours and the difference it makes :)

    1. I hope you get a skylight Tania. Having natural light filter in lifts your mood, brightens everything and saves in power.
I really did feel for the chicken who pushed that egg out. I kept looking at them that day trying to work out who it was. They all looked normal. Surely I thought they would look uncomfortable or at least come and tell me all about it. They do announce their eggs. This one deserved more than an announcement.
