A Fantastic Week

Another Friday has arrived once again and wow, what a week we've had.

Monday was one of those days when I needed to be in two places at one time.  The kids both had after school appointments in different suburbs of course.  Mum and Dad didn't hesitate in helping out.  Afterwards they stayed for dinner which was just so good sitting at the kitchen table with them enjoying a delicious Savoury Mince with lots of chatter and laughter.  Oh do we have some laughs.  Those ones that actually hurt your sides and leave you pleading and saying 'aaaaah, stop it hurts' but you just can't.  Loved it.

Savoury Mince

Tuesday bought another goodie as I met a friend for a coffee.  Well that morning coffee turned into a long chat and before we knew it lunchtime had arrived.  May as well have lunch too.  Even though we all have a lot to do during the day it was really good to put that aside and have a wonderful long, long get together with a friend.

I was having a little wander through our veggie patch on Wednesday and had the absolute pleasure of harvesting our very first cauliflower.

The florets had just started to separate so next time I will harvest a little earlier.

Then I had a decision to make.  How should I use this cauliflower?  Roasting was one idea I had however cauliflower rice kept popping into my head so the decision was made.  My favourite Chicken Cocont Curry with my very own cauliflower rice and it was the best rice I've ever tasted.

I also collected leaves from the cauliflower, broccoli and cabbages.  Every few days or so I cut a few leaves from here and there for cooking as well as sharing with our chickens.

The chooks, Samson and I have the perfect little system in place.  Each morning before I open the coop door Samson vacuums the run eating up stalks and grains and everything in between.

The kids had yet another student free day on Thursday.  I rode my bike to the hairdresser in the morning and let the kids sleep in.  By the time I had arrived home they were up, had eaten breakfast, cleaned up, dressed, washing was inside and eggs collected.  Time to visit Nan and Pop for lunch - that was their motivation to help out.  They love being with family and the quicker they can get there the better.

Now Mum and I have this thing happening.  Well it just happens naturally actually.  She never leaves our house empty handed and vice versa.  Just before we left to visit them Thursday I harvested our second Romanesco Broccoli just for them.

We also packed some fresh eggs from our very clever girls.

We arrived with our broccoli, eggs and homecooked Steak and Mushroom Pies which everyone enjoyed for lunch.  The pie maker was also packed so we could reheat them easily.

Mum had been baking of course and had made her homemade chocolate cake.  We grew up with Mum and Dad's cooking and especially Mum's baking.  Of course we were sent home with some leftover chocolate cake which my husband and kids finished off that night.  They were too quick for me so I don't have a photo.  Next time.

We had such a great day with home cooked food, lots and lots of talking, laughing, relaxing and the kids took their little dog Marley for a walk too.

Last weekend my favourite fruit and veggie shop closed as the lease had expired.  Luckily they are offering a home delivery service until they can secure new premises.  I was so happy as they stock a lot of local organic produce and I like to support them too.  Two boxes of fresh produce were sitting at our front door when the kids and I arrived home Thursday.

My favourite butcher has also recently closed due to the lease.  I have my fingers crossed they find new premises soon.  I like supporting our small local businesses and find you really get to know them quite well too.  I hope that both come back soon.

Today was a Samson day.  He has been enjoying a very large bone which has kept him occupied and he also had his yearly vaccinations.  We walked to the vet and upon arrival he drank every last drop of water in the 'courtesy' water bowl.  Nothing unusual for our Samson.  I know where the tap is located as this happens a lot so I filled it back up ready for the next dog.

He is just so patient with me - love him.

He weighs 37kg which is good, passed the general check and they are happy with his movement in the wrist joint from his osteoarthritis.  The lump he has which is a mast cell tumor is growing however slowly which is good.  We keep a very close eye on him these days noting his energy levels, movement and comfort.  After his needles he was given a treat, I paid and then he once again emptied the 'courtesy' water bowl.  I refilled it yet again and we were on our way.

We have had a great week so far and now it's time to relax on the couch with a library DVD Fences.  Have a great weekend.

  3. How wonderful to have such a loving, close knit family. That's one thing my kids have missed out on in their lives is having grandparents so close. They haven't grown up with cousins either, such a shame, very different from my own childhood, I too couldn't wait to get to nan and pops, at every opportunity, they lived on a farm, and I was always keen to visit!
